Harper’s Old Country
Store Celebrates Centennial

One of the oldest continuously operated businesses in West Virginia is situated at the intersection of Highway 33 and 55 in Seneca Rocks. Harper’s Old Country Store was built in 1902 and is celebrating 100 years of continuous operation by the Harper family.

Today, Joe Harper operates the store, in much the same way his great grandfather did a century ago. The interior of the store appears unchanged with numerous original features such as the wooden floorboards that must be oiled frequently, antique metal ceiling, and original store shelving and counters. In addition, other relics of days gone by give customers a glimpse into yesteryear. Most notable include an original moonshine still, antique cash register, old pot bellied stove, and a mounted black bear.

Outside, the architecture of the building with its’ welcoming front porch represents the vintage style of mid and late 1800’s. General stores by nature became the centerpiece of rural communities. “This is still the place where folks gather to catch up on local happenings.” Harper said.

The store has gradually transformed its inventory from a general mercantile to reflect the needs of a growing number of travelers. It all started with the climbers years ago. From all over the country rock climbers have been traveling to Seneca Rocks to tackle its amazing pitches, and stand on its knife like summit.

“We started selling more souvenirs, and catering more to the tourist trade.” He explained. Today, tourists make up the majority of the store’s customers. Harper’s meets their demands by offering custom made T-Shirts, snacks, sodas, ice, groceries, camping supplies, hunting and fishing licenses, ATM, copy machine, and much more.

However, the business still remains true to its beginnings as a general store even if it isn’t as obvious. Harper’s Old Country Store still stocks a little bit of everything, as he points out electrical wire, plumbing supplies, and other miscellaneous hardware in a back stock room. “I tell everyone, if you don’t see it ask.” Joe says with a proud grin.

Store hours are 7 am to 8:30 pm Monday - Saturday and 8 am to 8 pm on Sunday. For more information call (304) 567-2586.

Also, while visiting Seneca Rocks be sure to “climb to eat” at the Front Porch Restaurant upstairs. It offers an awesome view while you dine on delicious hot subs, chef salads, desserts, and more.
